A bit ofhistory...

Well before being a seaside resort, Capbreton is primarily a geographical site unique. Its major asset, it is the Gouf de Capbreton, a submarine canyon that descends to depth of 3 000 metres to a few kilometres from the shore.
Result : a wealth of fish exceptional… and so, early on, a fishing village.

Since Ancient times, the local populations live in the sea, fishing and the coastal trade.

The Middle Ages : Capbreton, strategic port

in The Middle Ages, Capbreton becomes the main port of the Adour.
At this time, the Adour river empties into the ocean to Capbreton and that is what makes the city a key point for :

  • trade of wood, the wine and the resin

  • the whaling

  • trade with Spain and England

Capbreton is more important than Bayonne on the plan marine. Yes, just that.

The decline : when the river changes course

to The XVIᵉ century, while rocking.
In 1578, the Adour river is diverted artificially to throw in Bayonne. Result :

  • the port of Capbreton is cover in sand

  • maritime activity collapses,

  • the city lost its economic importance

Capbreton is slowly returning to a small coastal village, living mostly in small-scale fisheries and the landes forest.

XIXᵉ – beginning XXᵉ : the renaissance resort

Like many towns on the coast, Capbreton is experiencing a second life with the fashion for sea bathing.
It comes to :

  • marine air

  • virtues “therapeutic” to the ocean,

  • calm and nature

This is the era of the villas in Belle Époque, walks by the sea and the construction of the breakwater, which today has become a strong symbol of the city.

Capbreton today : between tradition and the ocean

At the XXᵉ and XXIᵉ centuries, Capbreton is transformed into :

  • dynamic seaside resort

  • fishing port still active (one of the rare Heathland)

  • surf spot, recognized, thanks to the seabed of the Gouf

The city has managed to keep :

  • his identity maritime

  • traditions of fishing

  • a strong link with the ocean
