Located at Museum of Marquèze, in the town of Swords in the Landes, the eco-museum is one of the first open-air museums of France. Created in 1969 by the regional natural Park of Landes de Gascogne, its mission is to preserve, study and transmit the rural heritage and culture of the High Moor to the XIXᵉ century.
The experience begins as soon as the old station of Swords, where visitors boarded the train centenary of the museum, with cars classified Historical Monuments. This picturesque journey of a few miles through the forest of the landes and provides access to the district reconstituted Marquèze, a hamlet typical compound of traditional houses, farms, bread oven, mill, and many of the buildings of that time.
Onsite, the museum offers an immersion living in the life of the herders-farmers and craftsmen of the past :
the houses are furnished and spaces of everyday life,
demonstrations of ancient savoir-faire, crafts and games gascons,
domestic animals and cultivated fields, illustrating the organization of a society growing in symbiosis with its environment.
